Sprite High Output Shower Filter – Frequently Asked Questions

How is the Sprite HO different to other shower filters on the market?

The main difference is the quality of the product.

1. The inner cartridge contains a large amount of KDF

You might have noticed that there are many 12, 13, 15-stage shower filters on the market. They often contain a strange range of media types including ceramic balls, carbon, and sand.

Unfortunately, most of these media types don’t do a thing to improve your water quality. Either they are unproven technology or the water temperature / flow rate makes it impossible for the media to be effective.

In most cases, multi-stage shower filters are a gimmick.

The Sprite High Output shower filter contains a combination of KDF and Chlorgon, which is designed to strip out chlorine and bad taste/odour at high flow rates.

KDF is the most expensive and most effective shower filter media on the market. Multi-stage filters will only have a sprinkling of KDF in an effort to keep costs down.

Having a large cartridge full of KDF delivers much better results.

2. Replacement parts are easy to find

Sprite is one of the industries leading manufacturers of shower water filters. As a result, it is easy to find replacement cartridges and o-rings. This means you your shower filter will be useful for many years to come.

Do Shower Filters Reduce Hardness?

Yes, they do.

Sprite Shower filters contain a form of media called KDF – a proprietary blend of metals including copper and zinc. When oxygenated water flows through KDF, an electrochemical process call oxidation/reduction occurs.

During this process, some of the dissolved calcium and magnesium carbonates/bicarbonates are precipitated out of the water, reducing hardness. This means it will be easier to lather up your soap while in the shower and there will be less scale build-up!

What Chemicals Can Shower Filters Remove?

Shower filters can remove a range of chemicals.

However, they are most effective at reducing chlorine. This is ideal as chlorine is the chemical primarily responsible for stripping the natural oils from your hair and skin. Chlorine also creates toxic gasses when it is heated and turns into steam.

Shower filters are also partially effective at removing chloramines, which are created when ammonia is added to chlorinated water. This is important as Australian water authorities are increasing using chloramines in drinking water.

How Long Do Shower Filter Cartridges Last?

Usually, around 12 months.

However, if you are in a busy household where a lot of people are showering or the water quality is quite bad, this may be reduced.

You can improve the lifespan of your shower filter cartridges by regularly back flushing them, to reduce compaction of filter media.

When Should I Change My Shower Filter Cartridge?

There are a couple of signs which indicate that your shower water filter cartridge needs to be changed:

  1. Flow rate slows down
  2. You can taste or smell chlorine in the water

Do Shower Filters Affect Flow Rate?

Sometimes.

When brand new, a shower filter will have virtually no impact on flow rate.

However, after several months the filter media may become compacted and your flow rate may slow down slightly. At this point, you should open the housing and back flush the cartridge to loosen up the media.

If your water pressure is very poor, you may notice the impact of  a shower filter more noticeably.

What Are The Main Benefits Of A Shower Filter?

There are several benefits to installing a shower filter. They include:

  • Less skin irritation and dryness
If you are showering in town water, it will contain chlorine. Chlorine is a harsh chemical used to kill pathogens including bacteria and protozoa. Unfortunately, chlorine will strip natural oils from your skin and hair, which can cause irritation and dryness. Shower filters remove almost all of the chlorine, reducing these problems.
  • Reduced psoriasis and eczema symptoms
Chlorine can also worsen the symptoms of pre-existing skin conditions like psoriasis and eczema.
  • Lustrous and beautiful hair
One of the greatest benefits of removing chlorine from shower water is that your hair health improves. Your hair will be strong and less brittle. It can also develop a lustrous sheen once the harsh impacts of chlorine are removed. Scalp problems like dandruff can also be reduced by using a shower filter.
  • Less chloroform exposure
When chlorinated water is heated, the stem that is released can contain chloroform — a potentially dangerous chemical. Shower filters will take out virtually all of the chlorine, so chloroform cannot form.
  • Reduced exposure to bacteria
The KDF media inside of Sprite shower filters contains copper, which is bacteriostatic. This means it can reduce bacterial growth inside of the filter housing. Useful in damp locations like the shower.

Is This Filter As Effective As A Multi-stage Shower Filter?

It’s more effective than multi-stage filters as it contains more KDF 55 — which is the media primarily responsible for removing chlorine from hot water at high flow rates.

Filters like the Sprite High Output are packed with between 5 to 10 times more KDF than the average multi-stage filter, which increases its effectiveness compared to other products.
