Buyers Guide: Omnipure L Series Water Filters
December 8, 2021 12:13 pm Comments Off on Buyers Guide: Omnipure L Series Water FiltersChoosing a water filter can be challenging at the best of times, simply because there are so many filter manufacturers. When you do settle on a brand, you then have to choose between the various models that are available
To simplify the process of choosing a new water filter, we are publishing a series of guides which explain what different filters are capable of.
In this article, I am going to focus on Omnipure L series filters. They are extremely well-made water filters which are used in both residential and commercial operating environments.
L Series filters are also popular with caravanners as they are available in compact sizes and are highly effective at removing a variety of contaminants.
Let’s jump right in and take a look at what Omnipure L-Series filters are capable of.
Who Are Omnipure?
Made in the USA, Omnipure is one of the world’s leading water filter manufacturers. Established in 1970, they have become a global brand, selling filters in dozens of countries to both residential and commercial customers.
Omnipure has a reputation for offering well made products at a reasonable price. Their range is diverse with several lines of filters with different capabilities. It includes:
- Sediment filters
- Scale reduction filters
- Chlorine taste and odour (CTO) reduction filters
- Water softening filters
- CYST rated carbon block filters
- KDF/GAC filters and much more (more on what these terms mean in a moment)
Omnipure is committed to sustainability and has achieved WQA certification. This certification verifies that their products have been manufactured according to industry standards using best practices in terms of environmental sustainability and corporate social responsibility.
They have also achieved NSF 42 and 53 compliance on their products. NSF 42 certifies that a filter reduces aesthetic impurities like chlorine and other contaminants which cause poor taste/odor. NSF/ANSI 53 certifies that a filter can reduce contaminants which have a health impact like CYST parasites.
Omnipure really took off in popularity in 1999, when they introduced their own carbon block filtration material in the market. This helped them produce more effective water filters at a reasonable price.
They also developed an innovative compression moulding process. This allowed them to produce large one-piece carbon blocks that offer a longer lifespan comparted to the products offered by competitors.
These large carbon blocks have a uniform structure which resists channelling and reduces the amount of carbon fines released. It does a wonderful job of reducing chlorine, sediment, poor taste and odour, and other contaminants.
What Is The Omnipure L Series?
The Omnipure L Series was developed to give consumers an affordable and easy-to-use water filtration option.
They are twist-in filters which are installed into any L-series filter head with a simple quarter turn to the right. They are removed just as easily, by turning the filter to the left and pulling it down.
The L series filter heads are available with ¼” or 3/8” John Guest-style tube fittings. This makes head installation a quick process. You simply need to attach the filter head to a solid surface using some screws before pushing tubes into the John Guest style fittings.
The heads are available in single or double configurations. It’s easy to run multiple heads in a row, allowing you to achieve extremely thorough water filtration.
L Series filters have an extremely durable housing made from injection-moulded polypropylene. This tough material is uniform in its dimensions, which greatly reduces the risk of fitting issues. All materials are 100% NSF (National Sanitation Foundation) certified.
Omnipure produces L Series water filters with a wide variety of media options. They include granular activated carbon (GAC), carbon block, silver impregnated carbon, kinetic degradation fluxion (KDF), polyphosphate, and resin.
L-series filters are available in 2.5″ diameter, and 6″, 8″, 10″, 12″, and 14″ lengths
Omnipure L Series Naming Convention
When you browse the Omnipure filter range for the first time, you may be slightly confused by the naming convention used. You will see filters with similar names like L5548 and L5320 that have dramatically different sizes and capabilities.
The naming convention is as follows. The first letter will refer to the series of the filter. So, an L series will always start with the letter L. Omnipure also have the CL, ELF, E, K, and Q series filters (with different capabilities, sizes, and head types).
The next two numbers refer to the size of the filter. In the L series, a filter that starts with L53 will measure 7” by 2.5”, an L54 filter will measure 9” by 2.5”, an L55 filter will measure 11” x 2.5” and so on.
The shorter filters are ideal for installations with limited space, like underneath a kitchen sink in a caravan or RV.
In fact, the short L series filters are one of the most popular options amongst keen travellers. The larger filters have a higher capacity, which makes them ideal for applications where water usage is high.
The final two numbers refer to the filtration media used in the filter. There is a chart on the Omnipure website which describes the meaning of each number, but the most common numbers you will come across are:
Number |
Media Type |
05 |
5 Micron Sediment Pre-filter |
15 |
1 Micron Lead Reduction Carbon Block (CYST Rated) NSF 53 Rated / Cyst Rated (Giardia, Cryptosporidium, Cyclospora). Particularly effective at lead removal. |
20 |
1 Micron Carbon Block With Silver (CYST Rated) |
21 |
10 Micron Carbon Block With Silver (Non-CYST Rated) |
40 |
5 Micron Carbon Block (Non-CYST Rated) |
86 |
5 Micron Carbon Block with Scale Inhibitor |
Some filters will also have a letter appended to the end of their name, which indicates additional capabilities. For example, a L5320-P is a 1 micron carbon block filter which also includes polyphosphate for scale reduction.
